Further Location Research, Klinger Basement

After looking around for the first time to get an idea of the layout of the factory and what lied inside, looked around the again to find some more interesting areas in which we could film. We wanted a room that was dark so we could use the torches to capture some frightening and eerie scenes, so I went in search of the basement.

After looking around the basement, I took another look around the rest of the factory in more detail.

I found a large sign on one of the old office walls with the word 'Klinger' engraved on. It looked to be some sort of mural or an art piece with the companies logo printed on.

I also found the entrance to the roof. Some vital establishing shots could be captured from up here.

I finally come across a hedge trimmer lying in the middle of one of the rooms. We could use some props like in our trailer, e.g. weapons the mutated workers use...

I took another photo of the outside of the building but in different weather. The first visit was clear skies but I took this photo on a cloudy day. From this, we can get an idea of what the factory will look like in different lighting and weather. We can decide then in what weather we want to shoot the outside of the factory.

Deindividuation

Derren Brown- Deindividuation
TV Show
As part of our initial idea research relating to terrorism and anonymity we watched Derren Brown's series called The Experiments, specifically and an episode called the Gameshow where a crowd wore masks and could have a positive or negative impact on one man's life. It was to highlight deindivuation:
  • In trying to explain the behaviour of crowds, contemporary social psychologists refer to deindividuation. Members of crowds feel anonymous and anonymity leads to a decrease in responsibility and loss of inhibitions.
  • The phenomenon of deindividuation has been used to explain all kinds of anti-social behaviour, from the lynching carried out by the Ku Klux Klan to the genocide and torture that take place during war. It might also explain how cults operate and why people are prone to extreme behaviour on the internet that is at odds with their offline personality.
    KKK at an anti-immigration rally.
It happens when people become anonymous members of a crowd, they behave in a way that goes against their morale code and create a mob mentality For example, the KKK could wear hoods and cloaks to disguise their identity and there lose their inhibitions and fear of being identified.
Being part of a crowd, wearing a mask or being in a group can change the way people behave to a massve effect, this could be an important idea to our teaser trailer.

Open Wound Deconstruction

Initial Ideas- Chemical Leaks

Initial Ideas
Linked to the idea of Chemical Warfare we also researched Chemical leaks, possibly going with the idea that there had been a leak in the Klinger Factory leading to strange people and deformed people. We researched recent Chemical leaks and effects they've had and how common they are.

One of the worst Chemical leaks in the world:
  • The Bhopal disaster, also referred to as the Bhopal gas tragedy, was a gas leak incident in India, one of the world's worst industrial disasters. It occurred on the night of 2–3 December 1984 at the Union Carbide India Limited (UCIL) pesticide plant in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh.
  • A leak of methyl isocyanate gas and other chemicals from the plant resulted in the exposure of hundreds of thousands of people. The toxic substance made its way in and around the shantytowns located near the plant. Estimates vary on the death toll.
  • The official immediate death toll was 2,259 and the government of Madhya Pradesh has confirmed a total of 3,787 deaths related to the gas release. Others estimate 8,000 died within two weeks and another 8,000 or more have since died from gas-related diseases. A government affidavit in 2006 stated the leak caused 558,125 injuries including 38,478 temporary partial and approximately 3,900 severely and permanently disabling injuries.

Initial Idea Research- Chemical Warfare

Once we found a possible location (the Klinger Factory) we started working on our storyline. Since we were considering using a factory we decided to look into Chemical warfare to see if it was still relevant today and look into the idea that dangerous chemical were made in the factory.

Chemical Warfare
Chemical warfare (CW) involves using the toxic properties of chemical substances as weapons
Used in terrorism- Recent cases-
  • Early 2007 multiple terrorist bombings were reported in Iraq using chlorine gas. The attacks wounded or sickened more than 350 people. Bombers linked to Al-Qaeda in Iraq and have used bombs of various sizes up to chlorine tanker trucks. United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon condemned the attacks as, "clearly intended to cause panic and instability in the country."
  • On October 26, 2002, Russian special forces used a chemical agent (presumably KOLOKOL-1, an aerosolized fentanyl derivative), as a precursor to an assault on Chechen terrorists, ending the Moscow Theater Hostage Crisis. All 42 of the terrorists and 120 of the hostages were killed during the raid; all but one hostage, who was killed, died from the effects of the agent.
Used in war.
  • The Hague Declaration of 1899 and the Hague Convention of 1907 forbade the use of "poison or poisonous weapons" in warfare, but more than 124,000 tons of gas was produced by the end of World War I. The French were the first to use chemical weapons during the First World War, using tear gas. Chlorine gas was common. Official figures state about 1,176,500 non-fatal casualties and 85,000 fatalities directly caused by chemical warfare agents during the course of the war.
  • After the war, most of the unused German chemical warfare agents were dumped into the Baltic Sea, a common disposal method among all the participants in several bodies of water. Over time, salt water causes the shell casings to corrode, and mustard gas occasionally leaks from these containers and washes onto shore as a wax-like solid resembling whale sick. Even in this solidified form, the agent is active enough to cause severe burns to anybody coming into contact with it

Mustard Gas used in WW1

Effects of Chemical Warfare

Chemical warfare agents can be classified by their effects on the body. These agents are
blood, choking, blister, and nerve.
  • Blood agents interfere with the transfer of oxygen, suffocating the victim. Hydrogencyanide is a blood agent which kills quickly and dissipates quickly.
  • Choking agents damage the lungs.
  • Blister agents cause painful blisters on the skin and are especially damaging when inhaled.
  • Nerve agents attack the nervous system, causing difficulty in breathing, nausea, dim vision, convulsions, and death.

Amityville Horror Poster Decostruction

Poster Deconstruction

One of the films we focused on was Amityville Horror (2005) due to the fact it focused on a great location and a house. This was relevant as we were hoping to get a great location.
  •  Orangey, Red coloured font, stands out straight away. The “Y”’s tail almost seems to be on fire like a devils tail as it is directly behind the figure?
  • Tag line “Based on the true story”, tries to convince the viewer. Interesting use of word “the” instead of “a” as though it’s specific, more factual?
  • Positioning of the title forces viewer to follow the trail of light to see the figure then to look up at the house.
  • Green, grey and beige colour scheme. All looks faded no strong colours, blurred. Old photos from “the true story”
  • Very faded subtle news clippings giving idea of movie “says he was possessed”
  • “Katch em & Kill em” handwritten like a mantra or game. Expect colour to be red of blood but still grey scale. “K” sounds, harsh, violent.

Initial Teaser Trailer Ideas.

One of our initial ideas for our teaser trailer was to base it on terrorism which is theme still relevant today, to make it unique we looked at internet terrorism and therefore hacking groups. We researched different hacking groups Hacking Groups. It was interesting to see they started blogs and created logos and posters.

Hacking Groups
  • Chaos Computer Club, is based in Germany and other German-speaking countries. Famous among older hackers. The CCC describes itself as "a galactic community of life forms, independent of age, sex, race or societal orientation, which strives across borders for freedom of information...." In general, the CCC advocates more transparency in government, freedom of information, and the human right to communication. Supporting the principles of the hacker ethic, the club also fights for free universal access to computers and technological infrastructure
  • w00w00, is currently one of the largest non-profit security teams in the world with more than 30 active participants. (there are no "members"). created in 1998. Participants come from 5 continents, and 14 countries (Australia, Argentina, Canada, Japan, France,Finland, Russia, England, Spain, Sweden, Germany, Italy, Portugal, USA), as well as several U.S. states
  • Cult of the Dead Cow, also known as cDc or cDc Communications, is a computer hacker and DIY media organisation founded in 1984 in Lubbock, Texas. The group maintains a weblog on its site, also titled "Cult of the Dead Cow". New media are released first through the blog, which also features thoughts and opinions of the group's members. To further the Cult's stated goal of "Global Domination Through Media Saturation," over the years cDc members have granted interviews to major newspapers, print magazines, online news sites, and international television news programs.
  • Anonymous, a group of hackers originating in 2003.An image commonly found on fliers associated with Anonymous. The "suit without a head" represents leaderless organization and anonymity. It strongly opposes Internet censorship and surveillance, and has hacked various government websites. It has also targeted major security corporations. Its members can be distinguished in public by the wearing of Guy Fawkes masks.
  • Lulzsec, a group of hackers originating and disbanding in 2011 that claimed to hack "for the lulz". Currently broken up.
  • goatse Security (GoatSec) is a loose-knit, nine-person grey hat hacker group that specializes in uncovering security flaws.
  • globalUnion was a group of hackers, composed of about 60 individuals. The group disbanded in 1999, when 12 members were prosecuted for computer intrusion and 30 for lesser offences.
  • Honker Union is a group known for hacktivism, mainly present in Mainland China, whose members launched a series of attacks on websites in the United States, mostly government-related sites.
  • Level Seven was a hacking group during the mid to late 90's. Eventually dispersing in early 2000 when nominal head 'vent' was raided by the FBI on February 25, 2000.

Location Scouting- Holy Trinity Convent School, Bromley

Location Scouting

On the 21st September, Christina and Millie visted another possible location in Bromley. An old convent school which had closed in 2005.
  • Holy Trinity College Bromley (formerly Holy Trinity Convent) was an all-girls junior and senior school from the mid-19th century to December 2005 located in the London Borough Bromley.
  • A direct grant aided grammar school until the 1980s when it became purely independent.
  • Was run by the Trinitarian order of Roman Catholic nuns with a sister school in Kidderminster
  • Closed officially on 15 December 2005,  there weren't any pupils left in the school as they had all been relocated to other, mainly independent, schools in the area.
  •  Some Trinitarian nuns are living there until redevelopment of the site is completed.
The site looked really effective from the outside and pictures we took of the inside looked really detailed however there wasn't a clear entry into the building. The one entry we did see involved climbing over a wall with a long drop and then climbing through a window. We didn't attempt to enter as we didn't have time and as they were only two of us we felt it would be unwise.

Location Scouting - 'The Klinger Factory', Sidcup

After searching for possible locations to shoot our trailer, we found an old abandoned factory, the 'Klinger Factory'. After looking around the outside, we went inside and took some photos.
