Teaser Trailer Editing.

Teaser Trailer Editing
One of the most important bits of our trailer is the end, we subverted Todorov's Narrative Theory by starting in equilibrium and ending in disequilibrium. Therefore our final scene needed to grab and scare the audience, it needed to be unexpected. We decided on having Millie Mae scene as our final one. We had a 5.5 second long clip and were unsure whether to keep it long or cut it short, almost like a jump cut.
We edited the scene by changing it to a green filter making it look like it was in night vision, this was reinforced by using a torch when filming to add a two toned effect.
We inserted a blank text slide between a title slide and edited clip. We then made the screen black for 0.4 seconds to give the audience a sense of calm to think that the trailer had ended before the disequilibrium of the scream.

We also decided to divide the clip and mute the first half and placed a heavy breathing recording over it to create suspense as the camera moved jerkily around the room and then reached our villain.

Editing Effects

Whilst editing, I added a number of different effects to the footage to make it more effective towards the audience. The fine detail in these effects make the film more interesting and can be used as a transition between clips.

One effect I used was 'Bad TV'. This simulates the effect of a distorted/old Tv set. I used it to emphasise the 'dodgy' camerawork of the 'amateur urban explorers'. I also used it to simulate interference or the camera becoming disconnected when the explorers ran when they were in dangerous situations:

I can adjust the effect including the colouring, the type of grain, the roll of the camera (placement of the screen up and down) and the strength of the effect on the clip.

Below is a screenshot of a clip without the effect applied and one with it applied:

Editing

For the introduction of the trailer, we have decided to show the background of the scenario (i.e. what happened during the explosion of the Klinger factory in the 1980s). We found a video of factory workers working in an oil factory in the 1980s which although wasn't exact to the Klinger factory but was perfect for the beginning as it shows workers working in a factory in the 1980s.

In the trailer, we have decided to edit out a number of shots inside the factory to show the scenes of the factory.

We also have shots of the workers in the factory again to show the scenario what the Klinger factory was like when it was open. This did not take a while as we only needed to edit clips of the video we found from Youtube. We also used the effect of bad TV onto the clips as continuity to the clip below.

Establishing shot research 2

I chose to film an establishing shot of the factory that would make it appear 'cold', 'lifeless' and 'empty'. By speeding up the footage and showing the sky moving across quickly, shows how the factory looks over a long period of time but in a short space of time. This reminds us of how long it has been abandoned for, untouched.

After choosing an appropriate weather condition to film the front of the factory, I set up the tripod at the front of the factory, where the entire building would be in shot:

I then filmed the front for 24 minutes. I then sped the footage up by 4000%. I also changed the saturation, exposure, contrast and brightness to make the building appear 'cold' and 'dull'. I also added a vignette to darken the clip. To complete the establishing shot, I added text with information on the site.

This is the final result without text:

Establishing Shot Research 1

After watching the Grave encounters trailer, I analysed how they captured the establishing shot of the Psychiatric hospital. I found the way the sky rapidly moved across the screen very intriguing and effective. I decided to produce a similar shot on the Klinger Factory.

I will film using a tripod the front of the factory for approx. 20 mins. Once I have captured the footage, I shall speed the footage up to make the weather appear as if it is moving across the screen at a very high speed. This surreal shot will show the movement of the sky in great detail and makes the establishing shot more effective and interesting

I took images of the front of the factory in different weather conditions and lighting to see which would pose as the best for capturing :

- Bright
- Sunny day
- Clear weather
- High saturation
- High Contrast
- Overall warm hue

Dull
- Darker light
- Cloudy weather
- Low saturation
- Faded
- Low Contrast
- Overall cool hue

To make the factory appear more scary, I film the factory, on a more cloudy day nearing sunset. This way I can capture the sky's brightness falling and the clouds becoming more defined. I shall also edit the footage to appear darker and more cooler. This will make the factory appear that it is 'cold', 'lifeless' and 'empty'
